Bumling Brass Floor Lamp by Anders Pehrson, 1968
Bumling Brass Floor Lamp by Anders Pehrson, 1968
Early version of Anders Pehrson's "Bumling" brass floor lamp. Manufactured by Ateljé Lyktan, Åhus. Sweden, 1960s. This is an important & iconic design, with plastic rings under the brass shade to cleverly diffuse the light. Reminds me of a bucket hat! Lots of patina and marks, this lamp is perfectly imperfect and gives off wonderfully soft light.
The Swedish word “Bumling” translates to boulder, and is used colloquially to describe things colossal or otherwise unwieldy. It is what a friend of the designer Anders Pehrson allegedly called Pehrson’s new lamp when it was first exhibited at the 1968 lighting fair in Gothenburg.
This mid-century piece is one of the most recognizable lamps of Swedish modernist design.
